Notes

Use Gel Food Coloring for Best Red Velvet Color

Gel red food coloring creates vibrant red velvet cookies without adding extra liquid to the dough. Liquid food coloring can thin the dough and cause cookies to spread more.

Do Not Overbake the Cookies

Red velvet cookies should look slightly underbaked in the center when removed from the oven. The cookies will continue to set as they cool, creating soft centers and thick bakery-style texture.

Make Thick Crumbl-Style Cookies

Keep dough balls large and flatten slightly before baking. This helps create thick red velvet cookies with soft centers just like Crumbl cookies.

Soften Ingredients for Smooth Frosting

Make sure the cream cheese and butter are fully softened before mixing. This creates smooth cream cheese frosting that spreads easily over the cookies.

Shape Cookies for Bakery Look

For perfectly round cookies, use a round cutter to gently shape the cookies immediately after baking while still warm.

Make Ahead for Best Texture

Bake the red velvet cookies ahead of time and frost before serving. You can also refrigerate the frosting separately and bring to room temperature before spreading.
