Equipment

  • Large pot or saucepan
  • Heat-safe spatula or wooden spoon
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Microwave-safe bowl (for melting chocolate)
  • 9×9-inch baking pan (or 8×8-inch for thicker bars)
  • Parchment paper
  • Butter knife or skewer (for swirling chocolate)

Ingredients

For the Krispy Treat Base

  • 6 cups Rice Krispies cereal
  • 4 cups mini marshmallows or 1 bag, 10 oz
  • ½ cup creamy peanut butter
  • 4 tbsp unsalted butter
  • ½ tsp vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt

For the Chocolate Swirl

  • ½ cup semisweet chocolate chips or chopped chocolate
  • 1 tbsp creamy peanut butter

Instructions

Prep Your Pan

  • Grease or line a 9×9-inch pan with parchment paper, leaving overhang for easy removal.

Melt the Butter & Marshmallows

  • In a large pot over medium heat:
  • Melt butter.
  • Add marshmallows and stir until fully melted and smooth.
  • Remove from heat.

Add Peanut Butter & Vanilla

  • While the marshmallow mixture is still hot:
  • Stir in ½ cup peanut butter, vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt.
  • Mix until completely smooth and combined.

Add the Cereal

  • Pour Rice Krispies into the pot and stir until fully coated.
  • Transfer the mixture into your prepared pan and gently press down using a buttered spatula.
  • Do not press too firmly — gentle pressure keeps them soft and chewy.

Make the Chocolate Swirl

  • In a microwave-safe bowl:
  • Melt chocolate chips and 1 tbsp peanut butter in 20–30 second intervals, stirring until smooth.
  • Drizzle all over the top of the Rice Krispy treats.
  • Use a knife or skewer to create a swirling marble effect.

Set & Slice

  • Let the treats cool at room temperature for 45–60 minutes, or refrigerate for faster setting.
  • Lift from the pan, slice into squares, and enjoy!

Notes

  • Don’t overpack the mixture: Press the cereal mixture into the pan gently. Pressing too firmly makes the bars hard instead of soft and chewy.
  • Use fresh marshmallows: Older or stale marshmallows don’t melt as smoothly and can give the treats a rubbery texture.
  • Chunky peanut butter works too: You’ll get a little extra crunch and texture if you prefer.
  • For extra peanut butter flavor: Add 1–2 tablespoons more peanut butter or drizzle warm peanut butter on top before swirling.
  • For a layered look: Spread half the mixture into the pan, add a thin layer of melted chocolate, then top with the rest and swirl more chocolate on top.
  • Don’t overheat the chocolate: Chocolate scorches easily—melt it in 20–30 second intervals, stirring in between.
  • Add mix-ins: Mini chocolate chips, chopped peanuts, or pretzel pieces can be stirred into the cereal mixture for extra flavor and crunch.
  • Storing: Keeps up to 3 days in an airtight container at room temperature. Refrigeration is optional but can firm up the bars.
  • Serving thicker bars: Use an 8×8-inch pan instead of 9×9 for extra height and gooeyness.
