Notes

  • Add the fresh vegetables after baking so the lettuce, tomato, and onion stay crisp and flavorful.
  • Finely shredding the lettuce creates a classic Italian grinder texture that coats every bite.
  • Toast the rolls uncovered for a crisp exterior, or loosely cover with foil for softer sub-style sandwiches.
  • Swap deli meats like turkey, capicola, or mortadella to customize your pepperoni Italian sub melts.
  • For extra flavor, drizzle hot honey, balsamic glaze, or sprinkle grated parmesan before serving.
  • These baked Italian sub sandwiches can be made in the air fryer at 375°F for 5–7 minutes until melted.
  • Store leftovers wrapped in foil in the refrigerator for up to 2 days and reheat in the oven to keep the bread from getting soggy.
  • To make ahead, assemble the sandwiches without vegetables, refrigerate, then bake and add fresh toppings before serving.
