Equipment

  • Medium saucepan
  • Candy thermometer
  • Silicone spatula or heat-safe spoon
  • Small bowl (for blooming gelatin)
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Heat-resistant mixing bowls (2, for coloring)
  • Piping bags or zip-top bags
  • Parchment paper
  • Baking sheet or flat work surface
  • Kitchen scissors (for cutting ropes)

Ingredients

  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup light corn syrup
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 tsp cotton candy flavoring
  • 1/4 tsp raspberry extract optional
  • Pink food coloring
  • Blue food coloring
  • cornstarch for dusting

Instructions

Step 1: Cook the candy

  • In a saucepan combine sugar, corn syrup, water, butter, and salt.
  • Cook over medium heat until the mixture reaches 250°F (firm-ball stage).

Step 2: Add flavor

  • Remove from heat and stir in vanilla extract, cotton candy flavoring, and raspberry extract.

Step 3: Cool slightly

  • Pour the candy onto parchment paper and allow it to cool until warm but safe to handle.

Step 4: Pull the candy

  • Lightly grease your hands. Stretch and fold the candy repeatedly for 2–3 minutes until it becomes smooth, slightly lighter in color, and elastic.

Step 5: Color

  • Divide the candy into two portions.
  • Knead pink food coloring into one portion and blue into the other.

Step 6: Shape Twizzlers

  • Dust your work surface lightly with cornstarch.
  • Roll each portion into long ropes, then twist together to create the cotton candy swirl.

Step 7: Set

  • Place on parchment paper and let sit for 20 minutes until firm and chewy.

Notes

  • Cotton candy flavoring gives these homemade Twizzlers their nostalgic carnival-style taste.
  • A small amount of raspberry extract enhances the authentic cotton candy flavor profile.
  • Pulling the candy helps create a chewy rope texture similar to homemade licorice.
  • Cooking the sugar mixture to firm-ball stage ensures the Twizzlers hold their shape.
  • Dust your work surface with cornstarch to prevent the candy from sticking while rolling.
  • Use gel food coloring for brighter pastel pink and blue cotton candy swirls.
  • Allow the ropes to fully set before storing to maintain their chewy texture.
  • Store homemade Cotton Candy Twizzlers in an airtight container at room temperature.
  • For softer Twizzlers, shorten the resting time slightly before serving.
  • These cotton candy candy ropes are perfect for party favors, dessert boards, and homemade candy gifts.
