Notes
Use high-quality eggnog for the best flavor
The flavor of this Eggnog Latte depends heavily on the eggnog you use. Rich, creamy eggnog with real nutmeg and vanilla creates the most authentic holiday latte flavor. Thick premium eggnog brands work especially well for a coffeehouse-style drink.
Dark roast espresso creates the best balance
Eggnog is naturally sweet and rich, so medium-dark or dark roast espresso helps balance the drink and prevents it from tasting overly sugary. Strong coffee works too, but espresso gives the latte the smoothest café-style flavor.
Heat gently for the smoothest texture
Eggnog can curdle if overheated. Warm the mixture slowly over medium-low heat until steaming but not boiling. Gentle heating keeps the latte silky and creamy.
Froth immediately after heating
Frothing the milk and eggnog mixture while it is hot—but not scalding—creates the lightest and creamiest foam. Eggnog contains extra sugar and fat, so overheating can cause the foam to collapse quickly.
Fresh nutmeg makes a huge difference
Freshly grated nutmeg adds a stronger holiday aroma and richer flavor compared to pre-ground nutmeg. Even a small amount on top makes the latte taste more festive and bakery-style.
Taste before adding sweetener
Most store-bought eggnog is already sweet enough on its own. Always taste the latte first before adding maple syrup or brown sugar so the drink stays balanced rather than overly sugary.
Oat milk works surprisingly well
Oat milk pairs beautifully with eggnog and froths nicely for a dairy-free option. It keeps the latte creamy while adding a subtle cozy flavor that complements the holiday spices.
Make it extra festive
For an even more indulgent holiday coffee drink, top the latte with whipped cream, caramel drizzle, cinnamon, or crushed holiday cookies. These small additions make the drink feel extra cozy and special during the Christmas season.
